The irony was South African government was a major proponent of FOSS up to the mid-2000’s and then suddenly it just went dead, right up the point of a month before Ubuntu was going to be rolled out to replace MS Windows. The FOSS policy was approved by Cabinet, and never rescinded actually. Most of the internal IT resources have now left government, and some have even emigrated with those skills. Today it’s about subscribing to services with vendor lock-in….
